Trying to coat a steel and magnet roller, and can't use heat or water

2004

We have created a technology to make magnetic paper. In our process, we use a large magnet roller to magnetize our paper. This roller is in need of a coating to protect the finish from oxidation and also help with the release properties. Our coating is applied hot to paper and then wrapped around this roller to magnetize. Since this roll is made up of steel and permanent magnets, we cannot use water on it or have a coating applied that is hot. We have tried parylene, but weren't successful because the roller is quite large and would need a specially built chamber and extra vacuum pumps to accommodate it. We are looking into UV coatings, but looking for any advice possible. Thank you for your help.

Try a liquid coating that isn't water based and requires no high heat to cure. An epoxy would be good if it's not too hard after curing. Another choice may be plastisol, which is fairly soft.

Talk to a roller manufacturer about this, they deal with weird roller applications all the time. They may have a mechanical covering like rubber that can be used on your giant magnetic roller.
