Soldered joint turned gold colored

2004

During UL high temperature long term testing of a new product, we noticed that the soldered joint (63% Tin, 37% Lead)turned gold in color.

Here are the specs:
Base metal: Terne (LT01) plated Steel 85% Lead, 15% Tin.
Solder: 63% Tin, 37% Lead.
Flux: Superior Flux # 65 Inorganic free of Zinc Chloride.
High Temperature exposure test: 300 °F heated Oven.
Duration of the test: 90 days.

Did we use the wrong flux for the type of the base metal? This is odd but we never had any problem with Brass material.

Thanks,

Moe Rammal
