Must painted copper gutters be replaced?

Q. Is it true that once you paint copper gutters (painted by the previous owner) you have to replace them because they are no good anymore?

Maria Cristina Medina
home owner - Berwyn, Illinois, USA
2004

A. Where did you hear that --from a door-to-door salesman for aluminum gutters? I've never heard of it :-)

But it is true that it can be difficult to get paint to reliably adhere to copper.

Q. I am trying to decide if I can strip my painted copper gutters... where can I go for advise and product?

Barbara Yandell
- Holland, Michigan

Q. I recently purchased a home that has copper gutters that had been painted. The paint is peeling and I want to strip the paint of the gutters. What do I use to remove the paint?

Dan Barton
hobbyist - Norfolk, Virginia, USA
2005

A. Most any paint stripper from the hardware store should be able to do this. Read the label to make sure it doesn't warn against use on copper, but I don't personally suspect any problem with this.
