Salt Spray test for clear zinc plating

Q. I have a question about how much time in a salt spray cabinet should a Zinc chromate plated ( not yellow zinc ) cold rolled steel 1010 surface should stand up to. 12 hrs or 96 hrs.

Thanks

A. Clear cut answer for ten years ago: 12 hours for clear chromate, 96 for yellow. That was before the recent pressures to eliminate hexavalent chromates from automobile parts though. Today it is routine to use more sophisticated clear trivalent chromates and proprietary topcoats that probably should be expected to withstand 96 hours or more.
