Removing scale from Stainless Steel

O.K. Guys,

I have a question. How do you remove heavy scale from 316 Stainless Steel without using Nitric Acid. I have used a proprietary mixture but to no avail.If anyone has a suggestion it would be most welcome. Thanks!

We have found that using a solution of hydrofluoric acid mixed 1;2 water removes scale and welding marks from stainless steel prior to electropolishing. If you need more information, please get back to me.

page 194 of the 1999 metal finishing book will tell you exactly how to get the scale off. sodium hydroxide sodium carbonate / washing soda [affil links] potassium permangamate almost boiling. it will work
