Cleaning mild steel panel for coating purposes

Q. I am a PhD student from University of Malaya. I am doing a research on Polyurethane coating. I am looking for emery paper grade 0 in my country, Can you tell me where I can find it in Malaysia. What solution can I use to clean mild steel panel?

A. Hi, Thamil. Emery cloth is okay, but as prep for coating you really need aqueous alkaline cleaning followed by phosphatizing. These terms should get you started, but feel free to come back with additional questions. Good luck.
