HELP with chrome refinishing

Let me preface this by saying that I have absolutely no experience in metal refinishing ...and I have an old M880 Ramcharger I'm restoring. . . I have an old, pitted, chrome hood ornament that I'd like to strip and refinish. I'd like to refinish it with some sort of black finish to match the other trim. Is there a feasible way for me to do this on my own, or should I seek a commercial refinisher?
