Risks of trivalent chrome

I would like to know if there is any potential for trivalent chrome to transform into hexavalent chrome and if possible, under which conditions.

It can certainly be achieved in a laboratory through an oxidation process under controlled conditions. But from everything I've read over the past several years there does not seem to be any concern of it happening spontaneously in the real world.
