How to Replace Blackening Agent on Sterling Silver

I am trying to put the black finish back onto my mother's sterling silver where it has come off between the designs. Years ago she had a very small bottle of liver of sulfur ⇦ on eBay or Amazon [affil link] that she used to do this, but I was just a kid & now I don't know how she did it. Can anyone help me out here? Thank you!
