Since I'd never heard of the medicinal properties of silver, I decided to do a google search, and found some interesting information. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a final rule, effective -, on over the counter drug products containing colloidal silver or silver salts. It appears that FDA's position on these products is that they "are not generally recognized as safe and effective and are misbranded. FDA is issuing this final rule because many OTC drug products containing colloidal silver ingredients or silver salts are being marketed for numerous serious disease conditions and FDA is not aware of any substantial scientific evidence that supports the use of OTC colloidal silver ingredients or silver salts for these disease conditions." (Federal Register, Aug -) FDA has also sent out quite a few warning letters over the last few years to companies marketing these concoctions as cure alls for various diseases. I have found keeping a silver dime in my mouth for five to ten minutes to be just as effective or more so than using a colloidal silver solution to keep a chronic thoat and ear infection under control. After removing the dime from my mouth, I wait at least 30 minutes, then eat an active culture yogurt which restores good flora to my intestinal tract because the silver is non-selective as far as bacteria is concerned. I find this to work well and with no apparent side effects. I also used a petrie dish in microbiology class to test the effects of silver on a culture taken from my mouth--there was zero growth around the silver dime of any kind of microorganisms, while the rest of the petrie dish contents was covered in organisms.
