How to repair scratches in brass finish

I recently purchased a brass headboard at a drastically reduced price due to some scratches through the protective baked on finish. I am wondering if there is something I can touch it up with on the scratches to prevent dramatic tarnish, or should I just wait until it gets bad & have it redone professionally?
