Fluorocarbon Coatings vs. Hot Dip Galvanizing

Q. Do you have any service life data comparing Fluorocarbon coatings vs. Hot dipped galvanized expected life? I'm looking at replacing electric utility pole line hardware (aerial steel products) with fluorocarbon coated products. The "American Galvanizers Association" publishes a "Service Life Chart for Hot-Dipped Galvanized Coatings". It indicates a 40-50+ year expectation. I cannot locate any data on Fluorocarbon coatings. This is important as we are looking at using higher strength steel and are concerned about hydrogen embrittlement issues.

A. Hi, Ken. The difference, and probably the reason you are having trouble finding comparative data, is that galvanizing is a cathodic protection coating whereas the fluorocarbon is a barrier layer coating. Although the best fluorocarbon coatings may indeed last 40 years, it's no big deal if a galvanized coating gets scratched, but what happens if the coating is scratched through and steel gets exposed in year one?

A. On some offshore platforms a combination of a galvanic aluminium layer covered with a fluorcarbon coating is used. In salt spray tests this combination lasts more than 10.000 hours, in tidelands for decades without rust.

A. Remember that fluorocarbon coatings are very efficient electrical insulators. This may be important in your application.

? Sir: What is the chemistry (heat) of your high strength steel? Your worry about galvanizing high strength steel may not be warranted.

Solid Film Lubricants Vs Fluorocarbon Coating Process

Q. I understand that Application methods by comparing Dry(Solid) Film Coating and Fluorocarbon coating are the same, using Dip or Spray.

My questions are,

1. Are they actually the same thing? Properties? Performance? Assuming both are using PTFE as solid lubricant.

2. SFL is thermally cured, how about Fluorocarbon?

3. Can a company that specialized in Fluorocarbon coating also be able to do a Solid Film Lubricant coating? Are they even using the same type of equipment?

A. Hi Ray,

There are a few types of Dry Film Lubricants (DFL), based on various technologies. There are the PTFE based ones, but also DFL based on Molybdenum disulfide and graphite. These technologies are all very different, although their function is the same in that they reduce the friction between mating surfaces.

A company that applies a fluorocarbon or PTFE based lubricant may not be able to (or may be unwilling to) process other DFL coatings due too the possibility of cross-contamination.
