Rust effect

2003

We manufacture fibre glass garden ornaments and would like to do the rust effect on them. Certain commercial varieties of paint are available locally, but all give a bright yellow effect or dead brown rust. We would like to liven up the colours a little.

Can you tell me how the make the paint and what chemicals are used thereafter to create the effect.

Thanks,

Redish brown patina for iron:
iron chloride..........
15 gm water or pure alcohol.
.1 lit Solution must be brushed on grease and oxide free object(very thin).

Every layer must be well dried. Can be lacquered or waxed.

Good luck!

Hi Maureen Prentice,

Just for a fun ..... try this ...... dip the article in low concentrated HCl for some time & then remove it .... then after it gets rusty surface, coat it with good P.U. clear lacquer..... or clear varnish .... !
