Electroplating for injection molding

The injection molding industry have the problem that the plastic get stock in the molder. They used solvent to remove it but is not very effective, also lubricants are used but it is inefficient so the molders have to be replaced very often. It is possible to pre-treat the molders with some kind of electro plating finish in order to avoid the plastic stick to the molder or prolonge the molder live?

Yes, definitely. Both chromium plating and electroless nickel plating have been employed for this purpose.I'm sure that a literature search will give you the specifics you need.

I was talking just recently to a plating shop in the UK about the same problem.

These guys have plated a PTFE loaded coating onto mould tools for instances were mould releases were not suitable due to the part being plated afterwards.

I understand it's electroless Ni that is deposited in which PTFE is embedded, I presume it's in the solution in some manner.

We intend to use this on a set of tooling in the future.

Definitively the way to go is electroless nickel for the body of the mold (moldbase), and either electroless Nickel & Teflon or hard chrome for cavities and cores, we have developed a specific application for the plastic industry, should you need a deeper axplanation don't hesistate to contact me.
