Corrosion of nickel plating

We have a torsion spring (302 Stainless) that is nickel coated by electrodeposition. It appears to have a corrosive product on the surface which is green in color. Is this a corrosive product of the plating?

It sounds like a corrosion product of nickel to me. But what is causing the corrosion is not clear; nickel is a fairly corrosion resistant material.
