ASTM A764 Coating Weight Measurement

2003

We currently specified to a spring manufacturer a wire size as follows:

Hard Drawn Steel Wire, ASTM A764 [affil. link] Class 1, Type B, Finish 1, Tensile Class 1, coating applied by Electrolytic Process.

The minimum coating for .072 dia. wire is 46gm/m2

The mill certification states that it meets the minimum but when tested it fails and is tested at 28.99gm/m2.

The mill representative states this is tested prior to draw which will cause the coating weight to change. How should this be tested? Is ASTM A764 [affil. link] specific as to how and when?
