Teflon, paint, organic firearm coating Q&A

Q. Need a low temp, <550 °F, Teflon or other TFE coating for firearm coating. steel parts will be pre-parkerized.
Aluminum alloy parts will be zinc dusted. Must be q colored coating, wear well and feel "slick"..considering Teflons
Looking for other suggestions.

A. Diamond-like-carbon will be one of the best and economical coating that is marketed today. We do it in house and could test it out for you. It is typically under 1 micron thick, very hard and with lubricity of graphite. It is not so difficult for mass production either. But need to know what shape are we plating.

A. Mr. Mason,
Try the new Teflon/Moly spray coat from Brownell's ⇨

Baking temp is 300-350° F, it's similar to "Bear Coat" [Rocky Mountain Arms, Longmont, CO.] You have to bead blast and degrease prior to coating, like their baking lacquer. I've been looking for the same thing for the same purpose, and I think this will do it. Also been looking for anti-corrosive coatings for long-term seawater immersion for a NASA instrument we're working on, something like Magnaplate HCR, only more economical. Hope this helps, LMK what you find,

Tom Judd

A. There is a complete line of products offered from a New England concern, called RO-59 [Stoughton, MA]. I have used many of the varieties that they produce, and the results are excellent. All I wanted them for, was to produce a low coefficient of friction film on various plated parts. The products are essentially aqueous, and are applied by a dip, spray, or brush on. Some are even FDA approved for use on things like pizza pans (for non stick pizza). The Teflon is a dispersion, and I believe that you can get more information directly from them.

Q. I am looking for a vehicle to impregnate a hard chrome plated surface. Spraying it with the substrate surface @ 375 °F would be optimal however a brick that is applied by melting it on the hot substrate would suffice as well.

A. Hi Greg. I've never heard of such a product and don't know whether it exists.
The cracking & porosity in hard chrome will be quite fine, and I think you would need vacuum impregnation rather than a simple spray process to deal with it.

I'M JUST A HUNTER AND GUN BUFF, I'VE BEEN RESTORING OLD AND NEGLECTED FIREARMS FOR YEARS. BUFFING METAL WITH #0000 steel wool [on eBay or Amazon] AND USING BLUING PASTE I'VE ALWAYS BEEN BLESSED. HOWEVER WITH THE NEWER GUNS IT JUST DON'T SEEM TO TAKE. I HAVE HEARD OF A BLUING YOU SPRAY ON AND BAKE IN OVEN. I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT, IF YOU KNOW OF SUCH A PRODUCT YOU COULD SEND ME INFO, HOW AND WHERE I CAN ORDER IT.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH. BLAINE

P.S. Can we pray for are soldiers and p.o.w.s may god bless them.

Gasoline-powered Air Compressors

on eBay or

Amazon

(affil links)

A. Do a search for Teflon firearms finishes. There's nothing out there yet that matches bluing exactly but the semi gloss black usually looks pretty good on most firearms. There's two ways to apply the coating, one is in a ready to go aerosol can the other is in a bulk liquid state. The bulk liquid goes on nicer and seems to hold up better but you'll need an air compressor [adv: air compressors on eBay or Amazon] and a touch up hvlp paint sprayer [on eBay or Amazon] or airbrush to apply it. The surface should be sandblasted and acid etched first to obtain the best results with either method.

Q. Hello

I need help or information on what kind of paint would you suggest that is scratch proof, solvent proof, that would withstand physical abuse that can be sprayed on gun parts with little preparation in cleaning with more color option to choose from .

Thank you

A. There are a number of "bake on" finishes available they are similar to powder coating and normally used to coat engine blocks. This should be fairly easy for you to do (esp. as it only requires the temperatures used in a common household oven for the baking).

A. Roberto, check "Gunsmithing supplies" for the oven baked spray on gun coatings. They are easy to apply and will last.

Good luck.

A. Any acrylic paints will do. Preheat the gun parts to 120 °F for 10 minutes to clear the remaining oil. Spray on the paint and let it set for 8 minutes then bake it to 230 °F for 30minutes...
