How do you refinish brushed stainless steel?

Q. I have a stainless steel watch band that has links that have a brushed look and some that are polished? I used a mild polish on it to remove scratches. It also removed some of the brushed look. How do you achieve that brushed look?

The brushed effect is usually obtained in the factory with one quick "scritch" with sandpaper on a belt sander. Whether you will make it worse or better, though, I can't say -- especially if you have no spare links to experiment on.
