Zinc epoxy or cold galvanizing in lieu of hot dip galvanizing

Q. Where can I find Cold Galvanizing Compound / Zinc Rich Paint? Our boiler system (which used some galvanized pipe) has a couple of connections where hydrolysis has occurred. It was recommended that we clean the area and then paint it with the galvanized paint. I can not seem to find it anywhere.

A. Connect to zrcworldwide.com they have cold galvanizing compounds.

A. Brite Products and ZRC both have good products. You can get a list of suppliers for touch up and repair of galvanized steel at www.galvanizeit.com. There should be a link for literature and you can download it in adobe.

COLD ZINC COATING STEEL WIRE

Q. IS THERE ANY ALTERNATE PROCESS IN COLD DIP OTHER THAN HOT DIP GALVANIZING TO MFG. DETONATOR WIRE AT SPEED OF 80 TO 100 M/MIN WITH ZINC COATING OF MIN. 25 MICRON.

ALOK KHANDELWAL

A. Sure, Alok. The wire could be electroplated with zinc, which would be fast and would allow you to control the thickness. Although 25 microns is pretty thick for electroplating, it's not out of range, but and dip galvanizing that thin might be difficult anyway. Good luck.

Q. My problem in shipping...instead of using galvanizing in chain locker part (perforated plate) in ship, can I use paint with zinc rich epoxy primer followed by coal tar epoxy?

A. Hi, Velmurugan. Although there is nothing really "wrong" with cold galvanizing, it doesn't offer the life and robustness of real hot dip galvanizing.

Q. One of friends suggested to start a plant for galvanizing in a GCC country. Basically I don't know What is the difference Hot dip/Cold galvanizing. I would appreciate If you could explain more about this industry.
Thanks

I am Eager to know the difference between hot dip galvanising & Cold galvanising

A. Many people refer to Mechanical Galv to ±60 µm of zinc as cold galv. This is a process whereby zinc dust [on eBay or Amazon] is applied with kinetic energy due to a rotating rubber lined barrel.
The process is cold but can deposit high thickneses of zinc or zinc alloys.

Q. Sir,

I am a vocational trainee chemical engg. student.

The product we basically made here is corrugated steel sheets.
problem areas:

Actually when the strip after coming from furnace after goes to the zinc bath (chemical composition- 95% zinc,4.5% aluminium, rest is antimony, lead and tin), the problem is we have to charge more this material (chem. comp. given above) say 500 kg per day instead of 400 kg per day, so where is this error taking place? Temp maintained at 454 °

So basically what factors are effecting this cause?
What has to be done to prevent this?

Please refer me names of some books so I can understand it somewhat more clearly, so that I can also write in my project report.

Waiting for you reply.

A. Hi Deepak, I assume that you are implying that the galvanized coating thickness is about 25% thicker when the strip goes through the furnace compared to when it doesn't? Have you measured it and shown that? To my limited understanding, strip processing lines usually have some type of wipers or air blow-off device to limit the thickness of the deposit. Can you tell us anything about that? This particular thread is more about zinc-rich paints than hot dip galvanizing, but we have many threads specifically about galvanizing thickness control and causes for variations if you search the site.

How to know between hot galvanized steel vs. cold method

Q. Dear Sir,
I bought galvanized steel from a dealer and sometimes they gave me steel galvanized by cold method instead of the hot method. Is there a quick and simple method to tell whether the steel was galvanized by hot or cold method?

Thank you

A. Hot galvanizing is pure metal applied from a molten bath and it will look like pure metal, often it will exhibit a pronounced large mottled appearance (often seen on garbage cans) or a dull gray and drippy appearance (often seen on roofing nails). Cold Galvanizing Compound / Zinc Rich Paint is a zinc-rich paint of some sort and will usually look like paint. You will probably find it easier to chip or scratch the cold galvanizing than hot-dip galvanizing.

Cold Galvanizing a water splash ride at a Amusement park

Q. Hi All,

One of our customers has aging galvanized structure , it is a water splash slide at an amusement park.
We are going to use cold galvanizing spray to coat it.There are many areas which have corrosion this includes some sheets, under track areas portions of the supporting metal pillars, almost all the fasteners.

we plan to use rust converter [on eBay or Amazon] to reclaim the corroded areas and then coat it with zinc rich spray.

What surface preparation do you suggest ?
1) Sand blasting cannot be done because it is an amusement park , where hundreds of people come every day.
2) we are suggesting a scaffold structure so that men can reach various corners of the structure.

Does any one have prior experience?

A. Hi. I don't have amusement park experience, but I imagine that at least a few typical fasteners must be removed and examined, perhaps even strength tested, to understand whether corrosion has compromised them. There may be related guidelines in the bridge inspection industry if none exist in the amusement park industry. Obviously they must be replaced, not recoated, if severely compromised. Proper prep probably involves wire-brushing badly rusted areas, washing the structure similar to washing a car if that's practical, applying the rust converter [on eBay or Amazon] , then (after drying/curing) applying the cold galvanizing spray.
