Colouring copper by flame

I'm doing my first steps in copper artwork and I'm doing well ,but have a problem coloring copper by heat, I have tried many various ways but nothing. I can't get some vivid colors, I also tried to put some oils and grease but they are melting and burning .Please tell me how to apply oils and grease to copper and in what amounts. Is it possible with propane torch [on eBay or Amazon] or butane torch [on eBay or Amazon]?
