Cleaning cast iron bell

How do I clean a cast iron bell that is outside. Also can it be varnished or what would you coat it with.

Please advise. Thank you.

We have the exact same question about how to clean an outside cast iron bell. It's dated 1898. Can we just sand it and paint it with an outdoor rust-o-leum or is there a better way? Thanks for your help.
