Blackening of stainless steel without chromates or boiling caustic

I am looking for a method of blackening on stainless steel that does not involve caustic or chromates on a rolling boil (or near rolling boil). Is there such a critter and does it work consistently?

I suggest you try EPI / Electrochemical Products Inc. [a finishing.com supporting advertiser] of New Berlin Wisconsin , I am sure they have a Cold Black for Stainless Steel.

Chris: One option available for blackening stainless is to plate it with Black Chrome. It is a very durable and uniform coating.

finishing.com note: Black chromium on stainless does involve some corrosive treatments, such as Woods nickel strike and high concentration hexavalent chromium solutions.
