-----High working temp., wear resistant, dark colored plating
I am looking for a dark colored plating for hardened steel (A-2 or S-7). The need is mainly for the dark color. Have tried black chrome and black oxide, and both wear over time. The steel sees plastic in an injection mold with the temperature of the plastic up 575 deg. F.

look out for chromium nitride/ chromium oxide which is dark grey close to black. it is done by vaccum metallization process, by the way why do you want the inserts to be black.

Silicon nitride is jet black, can be applied in a conformal coating, is in the class of ultra-wear restistant materials, and will resist temps up to 2000F in air. As long as the substrate is robust, CVD SiN might be the way to go.
