-----Refinishing brass
2002
I wish to redo the brass on an antique bed which has never been lacquered previously. It is quite tarnished. Is there any easy way to restore the finish by soaking in a chemical solution?
Please advise on what is the best way to restore the original shine, and what coating (lacquer?)should be applied to prevent tarnishing and maintain the finish. I have not had much success with aerosol packs of lacquer, as it causes a misty finish. Your advise would be appreciated.

Hello Stewart,
A metal polish should clean the brass, provided it isn't too tarnished. If that is the case, you'll need to mechanically clean the brass, i.e. buffing wheel.
Your aerosolized lacquer is misting due to:
a)dry spray. Your spray is not heavy enough.
b)humidity. The moisture in the air is trapped in the lacquer film before the solvents in the lacquer have a chance to evaporate.
c)bad lacquer.
