A while back, one company advertised an electroless chrome substitute with the word substitute in tiny type and displaced from the word chrome. It was an electroless cobalt which is very hard and looks a lot like chrome.

Many efforts had been done in this respect but limited industrial success obtained.
I have two formulas for electroless chrome.

sodium hypo phosphite 10-30 gm/l
sodium acetate 20 gm/l

rate of deposition 1mil/hour
chromic bromide 16 gm/l
chromic iodide 1 gm/l
sodium citrate 10 gm/l
sodium hypo phosphite 10 gm/l
sodium oxalate 9gm/l
rate of deposition .3 mil/hour
