Protecting Copper Outdoors

Our church is planning to erect a steeple which will be covered with copper sheeting. We'd like to maintain the bright copper color and avoid oxidation. Is there a clear finish available that will provide this protection? How frequently will we need to re-coat the structure to maintain the protection?
