Process or chemical to make stainless steel wire cloth bright and shiny

Q. We are manufacturing Stainless Steel Wire Cloth. Stainless steel wires of AISI 304, 304L, 316, 316L are woven on looms same like textile weaving. The cloth woven from wires is known as wire cloth. The wire diameter is ranging from 0.558 mm to 0.025 mm and the number of wires per inch in the wire cloth both in horizontal & vertical directions(known as warp & weft) are from 8 to 500 wires per inch. We want to increase the shining of wire cloth & make it look very bright. The wire cloth is in the width of 1300 mm & length is 30 meters. The process should be simple, economical & non hazardous. As this product is used for filtration it should not block the holes of this wire cloth.

Can any chemical be used through which we can pass the wire cloth to make it bright? Traces of chemical should not remain on the wire cloth & the chemical should be food grade or at least not harmful. Water should be avoided in this treatment as it can cause rusting.

A. Mr. Bawiskar: We have several customers making similar filters with stainless wire and cleaning and passivating it with our citric acid based formulations with great success. The brightness and corrosion resistance are greatly enhanced. Let us know if we can help. Lee

A. Hello,

I read the question about the stainless steel wire cloth. I do not know of any chemical that could clean the cloth because S.S is a very non reactive metal. Maybe a high strength acid and a rinse with a detergent to clean the residue off. The first thing that I thought of when I was reading the letter is to reduce the wire to that size you must of passed it through a draw plate or die of some sort a dose that not leave a shiny finish. I have reduced silver wire and when it comes through the draw plate hole it is shiny I do not know if it is the same with S.S.

Thank you,

RFQ: Hi
I want to know about such a chemical which can make cloth so bright and give better shine without any skin problem. Does any such chemical exist? If yes, than please contact me.
