Salt air corrosion of hot dipped galvanized steel

Can anybody tell me how deep salt will travel through a new piece of hot dipped galvanized steel when exposed to constant salt air for up to 6 months? Would the zinc oxide barrier prevent travel past the oxidization layer? If this was then painted over would the salt continue to travel?
