How to oxidize galvanized steel for home craft project

I would like to get an antiqued look for a project using galvanized steel. I saw it done once but failed to catch the liquid that was brushed on to get the blackish oxidized effect. I would greatly appreciate any assistance or this craft project is doomed! Thank you! Laura Vitt
