ASTM B117 duration - real time correlation

Q. Good morning I write to you from Italy as I work for a research & development laboratory and I would like to know the correlation between the duration of an ASTM B117 test and the real life of our products(range hoods). Than you very much.

A. Juri - There is no direct correlation between hours in salt spray and real life. The salt spray test is best used as a process control tool. B117 is very specific about this several times throughout the document.

The short answer to your question is that there is no correlation between results from a salt spray test and real-world performance of your product.

Other accelerated tests have been proposed, but there is no consensus about whether these tests have better correlation than that provided by B-117.
