Brightener in nickel-chromium plating

I'm curious about the chemicals usually used in nickel-chromium plating as brightener and leveling agent. What kind of chemicals do they use and what is the mechanism which has taken place

Brighteners are not used in chrome plating. ASMI's Metals Handbook, Vol. 5, "Surface Engineering" offers a very good explanation of nickel additives.
