Cleaning Precious Metals with Citric Acid

Q. What is a proper mixture for citric acid and water (concentration lb/gallon) for cleaning cast precious metals?

Nghi Nguyen
- Owatonna, Minnesota

A. I don't think any concentration of citric acid will clean precious metal castings.

A. Nghi:

It depends on what you are cleaning off of the casting. I am not certain of the value of plain citric acid, but formulations on the market containing citric acid can work very well. Citric acid formulations are very safe in cleaning precious metals without attacking the metals.
