Cleaning Precious Metals with citric acid

Q. What is a proper mixture for citric acid and water (concentration lb/gallon) for cleaning cast precious metals?

Nghi Nguyen
- Owatonna, Minnesota

A. I don't think any concentration of citric acid will clean precious metal castings.

A. Nghi:

It depends on what you are cleaning off of the casting. I am not certain of the value of plain citric acid , but formulations on the market containing citric acid can work very well. citric acid formulations are very safe in cleaning precious metals without attacking the metals.
