Properties of A304 Stainless Steel

What are the physical/mechanical properties of A304 Stainless Steel?

Thomas D. Kolbo
Strucutral Engineers, P.C. - Marshalltown, Iowa

Hello Thomas!

Well, there's the type 304 stainless steel, essentially 18-8 (18% chromium 8% nickel) which has usually 30 ksi yield strength and 70 ksi ultimate strength. If that's the alloy you refer to, a lot more information can be found at www.matweb.com (it only looks user-hostile) and at the Nickel Development Institute, www.nidi.org, in the publications section. Titles which discuss "Austenitic" stainless steels will apply.

If you're referring to ASTM A304 [affil link] , that ain't stainless. Those are alloy steels with specified hardenability. So I figure it's the 18-8 you're asking about, although the "A" confused me.

Good luck! lee gearhart
