Post Treatment for Black Chromium plating

1998

We are looking for a post treatment after plating Black Chromium in order to improve the wear resistance without changing the electrical properties.

We've heard about a "oiled-leather" trumble treatment that may help.

We shall most appreciate your suggestions and comments.

Possibly I am a pessimist or just do not understand the question. Wear properties of chrome is about as good as you can get when properly applied. When you make it black by poisoning the solution with one or more chemicals, it obviously looses some of its properties because it is a new alloy. Also, this coating is very thin, so depends on the substrate for a lot of the properties.

A lot will depend on what you mean by "wear resistance". No top coat will improve this. Lubrication will improve this, but at what cost. Black chrome seems to me to be a poor choice if wear resistance is a major criteria.
