EN plating of steel

I've got [an] electroless nickel plating kit and am having trouble following their instructions. I do aluminum OK after using their Zincate solution before plating. I'm having trouble doing steel. There is no mention in the instructions that I can find where they specifically discuss preparing metals other than aluminum or pot metal. They simply say after the part is cleaned, immerse in the nickel bath. Also, there are many grades of steel. Any differences in preparation? How about leadloy, specifically. I am trying to plate crankshafts for model airplane engines. These are case hardened, I believe. Also, I'm having trouble resuming plating after the piece is removed from the bath for inspection. I use their pickle number 3 but I still get delamintaing of layers.
