Paint Analysis

What test can be done to tell whether a cured coating is paint or not from a coated part?

Binh Nguyen
- Peoria, Illinois, USA

Binh,

Infared analysis could be used to compare the cured coating to a know standard of the coating. The resins or polymers in a coating tend to have characteric Infared spectrums. It may be difficult to tell two coatings apart made by different manufactures with the same type of resin, but this technique can tell the difference between coating made with different resins and non coating materials.

Ted Mooney is retiring but I have several offers to take it over.
We're working hard to make sure we find it the best new home.
