RFQ: I have a '82 Fleetwood Brougham Cadillac and I have restored the whole car: the top, the paint, the interior, new Vogh tires... everything. I just have one problem, the rims. They are factory Cadillac fifties wired rims. They don't make them anymore and I have been every place in all of St. Louis. They keep telling me they don't re-chrome wired wheels because they leak once and get messy and they don't want to be responsible. My car is at least worth 20 grand or more right now the only thing that is slowing me down is the factories that I have almost have stroke cleaning them with SOS pad [on eBay or Amazon], chrome polish and acid. Please somebody help me restore this classic all the way back.

Q. Can auto mag wheels be trued and re-chromed? I have heard that this is no longer done because of the environmental consequences. Is this true? Does anyone know of companies that do this kind of work?

A. Hi Glenn. It's the cost more than the environmental issues which is the limiting factor. Re-chroming alone may cost more than new wheels, and when the cost of re-truing or other repairs are involved it can be prohibitive. Alloy wheels (which are usually aluminum these days rather than actually being magnesium) are still chrome plated in volume, but there is a terrific amount of labor involved in re-chroming wheels a couple at a time.

While I own a plating shop, we don't touch decorative applications much less aluminum alloy wheels! However, I was approached by an associate who sells Mercedes Benz and has a potential customer who is on the brink of buying a new M-B but insists the new aluminum alloy wheels get chromed first. I told him I had no idea who in our industry would be fit to perform this but thought FINISHING.COM might point me in the right direction! Anyone out there a specialist in the area of decorative copper-nickel-chrome on aluminum wheels? How much to do 4 and how quick?
