Q. I am making a brightener for a decorative gold bath, do I want to use cobalt sulphate heptahydrate or cobalt sulphate mono-hydrate?

A. I am sorry: English not perfect...

Gold plating is very kind of bath. Generally brightener is cobalt, cadmium, indium, etc.

The concentration of brightener is usually very low include.

acid type : 0.5g/l - 1g/l

EDTA 2Na is good low current part, and as Brightener react. Organic brightener is not used yet.

Q. I was wondering what citric acid does in the formula when making a bath? Also I was wondering how I can find this. I was also wondering if there is a substitute that I can use? Please help me find this and any other useful information on this topic. I will give the recipe to anyone who responds. Thank you.

A. Hi Khaled. I suggested an excellent gold plating book above. For chrome plating I suggest your start with our "Introduction to Chrome Plating".

Q. Hello,
I currently work in a small plating shop doing hard gold plating on kovar pins, copper, nickel, gold.

We don't have access to any type of analysis, our problem is our gold looks really good for the first 5 or 6 minutes of plating then it starts to get really dull after that; we usually plate for 10 minutes.
