Developing a process for chrome plating screwdriver with red tip
I am looking for a way to plate screw driver with the following configuration :
Sharpened End Black in color ?
Round body Chromium plated ?
What coating could be the black color ? Heat treatment ?
What is the common plating specification for this application ?

This finish was used on automobile hubcaps for ages. They chrome plated the whole hubcap, then painted the embossed areas black.
...and the black paint came off very quickly, naturally.
My feeling is that you will not be able to develop a satisfactory process that does not involve masking, but see "Studies of Paint Adhesion on Chromium Surfaces" by K.H. Hasmanis, Metal Finishing, Nov. 76. Maybe you could plate the whole thing, grind the sharpened end (removing the chrome) and find a blackening process that won't blacken or destroy the chrome. Sorry, I don't have this process in my hip pocket for you though.

Hello Rick, I have done similar combinations with Hard Chrome and Black Zinc Phosphate. The zinc phosphate will not adversely affect the chrome provided you do not acid pickle the part prior to phosphate. The zinc phosphate obviously will not hold up as well as the chrome plate, especially on the business end of a screw driver.Tim Bricker
