Testing maskants against chromate conversion coatings
I am trying to locate a company name, or contact for someone who can supply a product that meets QPL-81706 [link by ed. to spec at TechStreet]: Chemical Conversion Materials for Coating Aluminum and Aluminum Alloys. I am preparing to test a new masking tape for military aircraft painting in the Mil-T-21595 [link by ed. to spec at TechStreet] D Spec. I have located suppliers of the primer and polyurethane coatings we need, but have not located an approved supplier for the initial aluminum treatment. The specs I have do not specify the approved sources, and Government contacts are hard to come by. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think the problem you are experiencing may be in the terminology, Kurt. Jobshops doMil-DTL-5541 [link is to free spec at Defense Logistics Agency, dla.mil] chromate conversion coating, but for that coating to comply with that spec, they must buy and use QPL-81706 listed materials. Jobshops don't think of themselves as "doing" QPL-81706. Rather, chemical suppliers offer products listed on QPL-81706 -- but they are offering drums of chemicals, not satisfactorily treated test panels. Good luck.
