Thing for a rainy day

I have a boy who I think would enjoy an experiment I did at school when I was his age. We took pennies and put a nickel plating on them ( I think it was nickel ) . What is the simplest way for me to show this to him ?. And what and where might I find the required chemicals for this? Simple terms appreciated...
