Copper Barrel Blues

Hello, I wonder if you can help me. I have a "Copper barrel" I found in a garage. Someone tried cleaning already and succeeded on one side only. It's very discolored and grainy (tried polish-NOT!) Would your solutions with pennies work on this thing, or do I need something heavier?
