-----Durable Brightly Colored Plating to replace TiN
I am looking for a brightly colored plating for carbon steel as a less expensive option to replace Titanium Nitride. The plating needs to retain its color when exposed to 300 °F SAE engine oil. We have tried Zinc dichromate, copper and blued. All lose their color when exposed to the hot oil. Any suggestions would be helpful.

John - I don't know what you're looking for as far as the "brightly colored" aspect goes, but I would suggest trying hot black oxide - it will be color stable to over 800 degrees F. It's also very economical to apply to steel and will not change the dimensions of the part.

Dan, thank you for your quick response. We need a bright color that can be easily distinguished from steel gray by human eye or vision system. We have tried a black oxide finish. It retained its color very well after exposure to the hot oil. Unfortunately, the black color does not produce sufficient contrast with the unplated steel gray parts. Any other suggestions?

Ted Mooney is retiring but I have several offers to take it over.
We're working hard to make sure we find it the best new home.
