Plastic costume needs chroming

Hello...Anyone out there seen Star Wars? Well, I have a beautiful white ABS stormtrooper costume which I would like to chrome up.

The armor is very clean, brand new, and comes in about 34 separate pieces. The range of sizes in 3 inches by 3 inches to 12 inches by 12 inches.

I have been looking for someone to accomplish this for me with no luck. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Ed. note: This RFQ is outdated, but technical replies are welcome, and readers are encouraged to post their own RFQs. But no public commercial suggestions please ( huh? why?).

It's probably possible, Keith, but it would probably cost at least several times your highest guess. I would be pleasantly surprised if anyone could do it for you for under $1500. But there are a few prototype platers listed in our Jobshops Directory you could talk to about it if I haven't scared you off. (Just search for the word 'prototype' in that directory).

Any possibility of getting reflective mylar (like some balloons are made of) and attaching it with adhesive?

Thanks for the info Ted. I was actually budgeting $1000 for the chrome plating but based on your posting that won't be enough. I like the reflective Mylar idea and I will look into it further and also check out some of the 'prototype' shops. My only concern with Mylar is applying it so the surface is perfectly smooth without crinkles or bubbles.

Hello Keith,

Just saw your question by chance. I do have some experience with this process, it's called vacuum metallizing. ABS is an excellent material for this process. You will probably get fifty different prices from companies that do this work. Back at ART Center College of Design near LA the students usually could get work done for reasonable cost. Hollywood and Disney require a lot of this type of thing. Since the shops in and around LA do a lot of this work you stand a chance of getting better quotes from shops in that area.

Hope this helps.
