-----Stainless Steel Cabinets
I am a 43 yr. old first time homeowner. I one year ago I purchased a 100 year old house in Washington, DC. I decided to enlarge the kitchen area which is divided into two spaces. The kitchen pantry was turned into a full bath,I have plans to make it a powder room. The kitchen was last remodeled in the 1950's. InitiallyI wanted to get rid of my cabinets, however, now I have decided to maintain the period look created by the remodeling. After stripping a small edge of the cabinet to see what was under five layers of paint, including one I put on. I discovered that the cabinets are steel underneath. A look I would like to keep. My plans are to strip them. I am not sure what finishing product I should use to maintain the stainless steel look I want to keep. Any suggestions?

If they are indeed stainless, you only have to keep the surface clean with a soft cloth, removing grease with anionic surfactants like 409, or Fantastik, then rinsing with clear water.
If they are steel, you will have to apply a lacquer. I suppose a polyurethane or whatever is in the stores today for quality refinishing of wood furniture.
