Removal of heat staining from brass

2000

Dear All

I have precision made brass components (Cylindrical 12 mm diameter) They have been heat treated and have heat staining) Sand blasting them causes distortion. Any suggestions to remove heat staining before electro-nickel plating

A small mass finishing vibratory mill might do the job, depending on volume. You give me 12mm's O.D.,but not I.D. thickness. It must be thin because of blast distortion. Normally for speed, I'd recommend plastic media, but if you are still worried about distortion, I'd try using dry organic materials. Not knowing the surface finish RMS requirement, I'm not sure what specific product to recommend. All I can say that what you want to do or accomplish is possible.

I have found it ALWAYS better to avoid tarnishing of brass, then to try removing stains. If you could heat treat in an atmosphere of roughly 25% hydrogen, balance nitrogen, and as low oxygen as possible, say 50 ppm max., your brass would come thru looking as if it had never been heated at all. Take required precautions, since there is an explosion hazard, and work with an atmosphere supplier, of course.

Bernard - I would suggest trying a hydrogen peroxide based solution that will remove the staining and also provide a smooth shiny finish that will be readily accepted by the ensuing electroplating operation.
