Refurbishing discolored 316SS clad cargo tank

May 24, 2012

Q. 1. Removal of dark burn marks from the surface of a SS 316 clad steel plate?

2. Effect of spot heating (blow torch) of SS 316 LN clad plate of a cargo tank used for carriage of highly corrosive acids?

(The language of the sender of these pictures is incorrect. He does not understand that the plate is not coated but a clad (3 mm) plate. Please disregard the same.)

A. Classic heat affected zone typically seen around stainless steel welds. Blow torch is bound to do the same thing if the metal gets hot enough. The areas should be re-passivated to restore the corrosion resistance lost to the HAZ effect.

Does anybody care about the discoloration? If these are just cargo tanks it shouldn't matter what they look like. Depending on what kind of "highly corrosive acids" are being put in these, they might take care of the discoloration for you anyway.
