Tarnish on tinned busbar surface

December 22, 2009

Dear Sirs,
I would like to seek your expert advice and remedial actions on the following situation.

I have supplied a switchboard with tinned copper busbars to a very particular customer.
The busbars were accidentally wiped with a soap solution and it is now tarnished and discoloured. If there are traces of acid in the solution, how will this affect the tinning and copper? Can cleaning with an alkaline solution help?
I am polishing part of the affected area with Brasso to get back the shine and also to check if any corrosion has taken place.
If there is corrosion, can the busbars be removed, cleaned and re-tinned or will I have to
renew it?

Your feedback is most appreciated.
