Corrosion due to Chloride
September 4, 2009
I am working in a steel industry and we are facing acorrosion problem in corrogated hoses (SS 304/316), probably because of chloride.
Actually these hoses are used for circulating gases
(CO-19%,CH4-17%,H2-40%,CO2-18%,N2-7% Dry analysis) with a temperature of 525 deg celcius. This gas also carries 16-17% moisture. The water which is used to clean and cool this gas in the down stream contains Chloride - 450 ppm , total hardness - 250 ppm ,TDS - 1500 ppm pH -
8.
Could you please guide us that the corrosion which is taking place in these hoses are because of chloride concentration or some thing else.

Chloride ions aren't particularly found in air humidity.
It looks to me like you are working with synthesis gas. At these temperatures CO2, H2O and sometimes CO can attack the steel in your hoses.
