Best Coating Material
April 6, 2009
Dear Friends,
1. What is the industrially used coating materials for the
following
-Wear Resistant Application
-Corrosion Resistant Application
-Aesthetic Appearance
2. Is that Nickel Coating is applicable for all???

Yes, Karthick. Nickel meets those requirements. But it is
difficult or impossible to say what is the "best" coating without a
pretty exhaustive process and highly detailed conditions.

Electroless nickel is harder and more wear resistant than most
other nickel plate. There also is a difference in properties between
different EN types.

Hard Chrome Plating is the best suitable Coating material for your
applications. Hard Chrome is having excellent wear resistance, high
Hardness and high corrosion resistance compared to Nickel Plating.
You can get good brightness by using Secondary Organic Catalyst Hard
Chrome plating solutions.

Thanks, R, there is indeed a lot to be said for hard chrome
plating. But more corrosion resistant than electroless nickel? Sorry,
that's not correct.

Hi Karthick,
why you want only nickel plating?
if you are doing teflon based coating, like PTFE or Powder
coating(Rilsan)or Zinc flake coatings(Geomet & dacrol)you will
silve your problems.

Yes Mr.Ted, you are right. I quoted only against Electro Nickel
Plating.Electroless Nickel(High Phosphorus)having maximum corrosion
resistance but with a lower Aesthetic appearance.

If you are talking wear resistance, PVD coatings -- mostly metal
nitrides and carbo-nitrides -- greatly outperform wet platings. PVD
coatings are also used for decorative purposes on a wide variety of
products, including faucets and door hardware. The coatings are thin
and likely to have pinholes down to the substrate, so don't provide
much in the way on corrosion resistance. I'm working on that problem,
looking at post-deposition processes to fill in the holes in the
coating.
